“Arven” is the second album by Norwegian multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Zenon (aka Filip Zenon Ramberg), a record that takes you on a deep, intimate journey into cutting-edge Scandinavian prog rock.
Zenon were born in Drammen, near Oslo, as Filip Zenon Ramberg’s solo project. Over time, especially between the first album “Passasje” (2021) and “Arven” (2023), they turned into a real band.
Their music blends ’70s psychedelic rock, jazz and traditional Norwegian folk, with spiritual and philosophical lyrics. In the studio, Filip composes and plays almost all the instruments, but live the band is a quartet.

Filip Zenon Ramberg (Multi-instrumentalist, Songwriter and Drummer) is the brain behind Zenon: he writes the lyrics, composes the music and records vocals, guitars, synthesizers and keyboards. He’s a big fan of ’60s and ’70s psychedelia.
Besides Zenon, Filip is a highly regarded drummer in Oslo’s underground scene. He has played with Tusmørke and often collaborates with Martin van Houtum on his solo project.
Michelle Uller (Vocals) is Zenon’s singer and backing vocalist. Her ethereal, dreamy voice creates a magical contrast with the band’s heavy psychedelic music. Michelle is also Filip’s wife and devotes herself almost exclusively to Zenon, taking part in concerts and recording backing vocals and lead parts.
Martin van Houtum (Bass) is a Dutch multi-instrumentalist and producer living in Oslo. He’s the bassist who plays Zenon’s intricate, jazzy bass lines. Martin is very active in the Scandinavian underground scene.
The lineup also includes Håkon Oftung (Guitar - Live Member), who joined Zenon to let the band perform their complex arrangements live, so Filip can focus on drums during concerts. Håkon is a pillar of modern Norwegian progressive rock. He is the leader, singer and multi-instrumentalist of the prog-folk band Jordsjø. He has also played and collaborated with historic groups such as Wobbler, Tusmørke, Black Magic and The Chronicles of Father Robin.
The story of Arven is closely tied to the journey of personal, family and musical growth of its creator, Filip Zenon Ramberg. This album is not just a collection of songs, but a true essay on psychological and spiritual heritage.
After releasing his first solo album, Passasje, in 2021, Filip Ramberg lived through a year full of experiences as drummer for Tusmørke. This immersion in the Scandinavian avant-garde scene enriched his technical skills. Meanwhile, he kept studying new instruments and experimenting with new sounds at home. Once the Tusmørke experience ended, he felt the urge to express these new influences and visions in a second album for the Zenon project.
The title “Arven” means “The Weight of Blood” in Norwegian, since the word “Arven” translates as “The inheritance” or “The legacy”. Filip built the whole album around a deep reflection on his family and describes it like this:
“There is a long musical tradition in my family, and something special – a musical and psychological heritage – within which I’m trying to find my voice”.
The album tells the path of an artist trying to embrace his cultural and family roots, seeking a balance between tradition and modernity to create a unique musical identity. Lyrically, it’s a deeply personal, philosophical and spiritual work, comparable to a prog version of Ecclesiastes, with its reflections on the cyclical nature of life, the vanity of things and time passing by. This introspective, almost sacred mood translates into songs sung in the mother tongue, alternating melancholy ballads with powerful sonic explosions.
January 2023, Oslo. Zenon meet in the studio with producer Per Christian Berg, a real wizard who can fuse the sound of the ’70s with today’s. The result? An album of only five tracks, but unafraid to dare and to stretch out, with “Vitne” topping 10 minutes and delivering cinematic, dark soundscapes.
To bring all this magic to the stage, Zenon decided to take the big step: from a studio project they turned into a stable quartet, with the addition of Håkon Oftung of Jordsjø on guitar.
Arven offers a hypnotic, deep sound rooted in Scandinavian avant-garde progressive rock, but also pushing toward vintage psychedelia and contemporary jazz. The album is marked by a cinematic, dark and introspective atmosphere, with a strong contrast between moments of acoustic melancholy and intense sonic outbursts.
The album’s instrumental core recalls early ’70s psychedelic underground. Fuzz guitars deliver a dirty, distorted sound typical of acid psychedelia, while organs and vintage synths create hypnotic, enveloping sound beds.
Unlike classic symphonic prog rock, Arven integrates a strong rhythmic and expressive component tied to other genres. Martin van Houtum’s jazzy bass lines are intricate and dynamic, giving fluidity even to the heaviest passages. In the warmer ballads, you can feel the influence of traditional Norwegian folk, dark and nature-bound, amplified by the use of the mother tongue.
The album rejects the classic song structure, developing instead through extended tracks and suites. The record opens with “Vitne”, a monumental piece over 10 minutes long, marked by hypnotic jams that alternate long, expanded instrumental segments with dramatic sung parts.
One of the most original aspects of Arven’s style is the vocal interplay. Filip Ramberg’s voice is often theatrical, rough and introspective, while Michelle Uller’s lead voice and choirs bring an element of light, ethereal and dreamy, creating an almost sacred effect that cuts through the heavy, dark instrumental textures.
Arven stands out for its symbiotic unity and for an almost “spiritual” recording method. The album was recorded almost entirely live in the studio, with the band choosing to keep the first takes to preserve the magic, imperfection and energy of the moment, rather than opting for a cold, computer-manipulated production. Each studio session began with a group meditation, followed by coffee and work in a deep, attentive silence.
The opening track, “Vitne (The Witness)”, is the album’s creative peak, a suite over 10 minutes long that embodies the record’s philosophy. It starts as an airy, light folk-jazz, then turns into an acid rock, dark and introspective.
One of the album’s most surprising elements is the “Folk-Dance” rhythmic component, where the drum and bass grooves are inspired by the steps and movements of traditional Scandinavian folk dances, rather than following classic rock patterns. The album constantly alternates old-time acoustic ballads and sudden heavy explosions driven by vintage fuzz distortions, creating a continuous emotional up-and-down.
The record’s alchemy comes from the chemistry between Filip, Martin and Michelle, with Filip enriching the sound with unique harmonic solutions and Martin creating a rhythmic dance with him. Christian, the producer, balanced the vintage sound with modern standards.
Arven is a gem of modern Scandinavian progressive rock. It’s not a record to put on in the background, but it demands a good dose of attention. And believe me, it’s worth it! The atmosphere is unique and has that analog warmth that’s now rarely found.
The vocals are strictly in Norwegian, and while on one hand it adds a touch of folk charm and mystery, on the other it might make listening a bit more demanding.
It’s a bold, fascinating and deeply sincere work. If you like the atmospheres of Tusmørke, the hypnotic folk of Jordsjø or old-school psychedelia, this album is absolutely worth hearing and confirms Zenon as one of the most interesting and introspective minds in the Norwegian underground.
