Pink Floyd: Between Three Leaders and the Genius of Wright

Pink Floyd would require a book, so I'll limit myself to some basic information.
The group was founded in London in 1965 by the genius singer and guitarist Syd Barrett, bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, and keyboardist Richard Wright. In 1968, guitarist and singer David Gilmour joined the quartet, later replacing Barrett, who had gradually distanced himself from the band due to drug abuse and a sense of alienation.
A very long career, from their first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967, to a few weeks ago with the release of Pink Floyd at Pompeii - MCMLXXII (2025 Mix) in 2025.
With a lot of experimentation, beautiful artwork, mostly from the Hipgnosis studio, philosophical lyrics, and fantastic live performances,
undoubtedly one of the most influential bands in the history of music. I come across albums with a "Floydian" sound every day.
Not just the psychedelic music and space rock, of which they are considered pioneers, but also splendid progressive rock.
The first leader was Barrett, then Waters, and finally Gilmour, and each of them influenced the band's musical matrix with their own personal touch.
Barrett, with the psychedelic sound, was the main songwriter on their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
Waters, under whose leadership the albums The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut were released.
With Gilmour, the albums A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell, and The Endless River were released.
After Barrett, another major change occurred in 1979 during the recording of The Wall: Wright was ousted from the group and only took part in the subsequent tour as a session musician.
In 1985, Waters also left the band;
A legal dispute arose over the use of the group's name; Gilmour and Mason were allowed to continue Pink Floyd, later rejoining Wright.
The band members ceased working together in 1994.
In 2008, the group was awarded the Polar Music Prize, a sort of Nobel Prize for music.
Despite lineup changes, Pink Floyd have always had an immediately recognizable sound, the so-called "Pink Floyd Sound," with which they have become identified, largely due to Wright's genius.
It's important to note that Pink Floyd's affiliation with the Progressive Rock genre has always been a heated debate in the music world.
Their influences are manifold: they have influenced numerous musicians and groups, such as David Bowie, Genesis, Queen, Yes, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, Ayreon, Dream Theater, Tool, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Steven Wilson in his various projects including Porcupine Tree, Rush, neo-progressive bands, and how can we forget Pitura Freska's tribute with the song Pin Floi, which recounts the beautiful yet controversial 1989 Venice concert.
Pink Floyd have sold hundreds of millions of records worldwide and recently sold their catalog to Sony for around $400 million, with many more to come.
