Steven Wilson, the genius of modern music

 Crossover Prog

img_6083 - copia.jpeg

Steven Wilson was born in Hemel Hempstead, UK, on November 3, 1967, and has maintained a very private life for most of his career, only sharing information about his personal life in recent years.

In September 2019, Wilson married his longtime partner, Rotem. The two first met in 2000, but began their relationship about 16 years later. He has no biological children, but through marriage, he became stepfather to Rotem's two daughters from a previous relationship. He has described this family dimension as a profound change that has influenced his worldview and his music. He lives in London, in a northwest area of the city, and is openly atheist and critical of organized religion, themes that often emerge in his lyrics. He has described himself as a "vegetarian/vegan" for many years.

He is a film buff, considering it his main source of inspiration besides music, so much so that he often describes his albums as "talkies" (I agree with this definition), and has a vast record collection.

He has an almost maniacal obsession (without the almost) with sound quality and mixing technology. He owns a dog named Bowie (in honor of David Bowie), who occasionally appears on his social media channels.

The profile of an ordinary person, "one of us" so far, we have much in common in our private lives and in our passions but behind this apparent normality hides genius.

Musically and professionally, Wilson is a British musician, singer-songwriter, and producer, the founder, frontman, and creative mind of Porcupine Tree. He has a prolific solo career, collaborating with various side projects, including  Blackfield with Aviv GeffenStorm Corrosion with  Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth, and remixing iconic prog rock albums including King Crimson and Jethro Tull

He founded Porcupine Tree in the 1980s, a band born in his imagination, as a joke, which later became reality, as described in my profile on them. He became the band's leader, releasing numerous albums that have firmly established the band among the elite of progressive rock, influencing numerous other contemporary bands.
As a solo artist, he has developed a career spanning progressive rock and electronica, blending influences from  Pink Floyd to Jethro Tull. He has also explored other genres with Blackfield, a duo with Israeli singer-songwriter Aviv Geffen, blending progressive and pop. Storm Corrosion, in collaboration with Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt, has also released outstanding works with Bass Communion, the short-lived but intense I.E.M project, which also explored cosmic music, and the  No-Man project.

As a remixer, he has worked on classic progressive rock albums, revitalizing and enhancing works by bands such as King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and Yes.

His style is built on innovative atmospheres and integrates electronica and references to the great prog bands of the '70s with a contemporary approach. His solo career began in 2008 with Insurgentes, exploring genres ranging from jazz-fusion to electronic pop.

In 2020, the biography “Deform to Form a Star” was published, which traces his thirty-year career. To conclude this brief biographical note, I would like to quote the advertising presentation, which in my opinion fully captures the importance of this musical giant of our time: “Steven Wilson is one of the most committed and important artists in the global music scene of the last thirty years. Former leader of Porcupine Tree since the late 1980s and now an established solo artist, four-time Grammy nominee, sound engineer responsible for remixes of artists such as King Crimson, Yes and Tears For Fears, Wilson has been described by the British press as “the most successful artist no one has ever heard of,” capable – without any media push – of filling arenas and theaters and climbing the sales charts all over the world, both with his band and alone. Mostly associated with progressive rock, of which he is one of the greatest contemporary exponents, Wilson has never set stylistic and sonic limits throughout his career, giving life to an almost unlimited number of group and solo projects. soloists who explore every sonic possibility, from the most self-indulgent avant-garde to traditional pop, from pure instrumental and electronic experimentation to the most extreme metal. This book recounts and analyzes one by one, as never before, the stories and music of all Wilson's projects, from his childhood beginnings in his beloved Hemel Hempstead to the global success of his latest album, To the Bone, whose tour culminated in a series of three consecutive sold-out concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall, the temple of British and world pop and rock music."

Much has happened since 2020. He released  The Future Bites in 2021, The Harmony Codex in 2023, and then The Overview, his eighth studio album in 2025, a beautiful concept album inspired by space exploration, followed by a fantastic tour, "The Overview Tour" of which I saw a memorable concert in Rome.
