King Crimson, Discipline, released in September 1981
An album that's thrilling every time you listen to it, the first of a trilogy that also includes the subsequent albums "Beat" (1982) and "Three of a Perfect Pair" (1984).
Discipline was also the band's name for a few weeks immediately after their reunion, and the name of the record label that Robert Fripp founded in the 1990s.
A sound defined by the guitars of Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, with a flawless rhythm section, the use of Chapman Stick and synthesizers, with sounds ranging from ambient, noise, and repetitive music, with an incredible structure and complex rhythmic interconnections.
Besides Fripp and Adrian Belew, there's Tony Levin on bass and Chapman Stick and Bill Bruford on drums, extraordinary.
It's all there, but nothing comparable to early King Crimson. It's still different from In the Court of the Crimson King, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, or Red, a simply fundamental album, with its fantastic fusion of typical '80s new wave sounds with the heavy, dark atmospheres of the previous decade.
The album contains some of King Crimson's finest songs, including "Frame by Frame," with its polyrhythmic structure and the virtuoso guitars of Fripp and Adrian Belew—pressing, hypnotic.
Another masterpiece on this album is "The Sheltering Sky," atmospheric with minimalist sounds and world music sounds. Fripp's guitar is superb, and the tension builds.
How could we not mention "Indiscipline," where dissonance reigns supreme? A dialogue between Belew and Fripp's riffs, chaos, silence, and growing tension, all of which is impactful.
Essential but wonderful ArtWork, minimalist and of great impact like the whole album
An immense album that remains relevant today, indeed, one that still looks ahead. A masterpiece of innovation, a sort of genetic heritage of modern music to be left to posterity.
