Gravity by Anekdoten, album released in 2003, one of the most moving albums I've ever heard.
The approach is experimental and psychedelic, distancing itself from classic progressive rock with a darker sound and new wave influences, especially on the title track.
The sounds seem more elaborate than the other albums, as do the atmospheres, which are decidedly deeper and more intense.
- Shining examples are Monolith, which is pure power with mellotron, bass, and top-notch guitar.
- My favorite is SW4, an intensity never heard before from this or other bands, even though it's the only track without mellotron, but made intense by psychedelic and experimental sounds.
- Gravity is a great piece, focused on the vocals at the beginning and then the mellotron takes center stage, with a strong impact due to a deep sound and dark atmosphere. Fantastic!
This band knows how to write music that's as complex as it is spontaneous, powerful and menacing yet delicate, always emotional, deeply psychological. All the compositions and performances are splendid.
If I had to describe it as an emotion, there's a strange sense of hope on the album, the kind you feel when you've hit rock bottom and have just managed to bounce back, when it makes you appreciate what you previously took for granted.
Gravity, I know few people think so, is their finest album in my opinion.
I recommend it to everyone, along with the other albums by this fantastic band.
