It was recorded in Eskilstuna, the band's hometown, in 2003 and was played entirely unplugged.
They are a Swedish progressive metal band led by the great Daniel Gildenlöw, composer, guitarist, singer, and lyricist.
Their sound revolves around stunning guitar riffs and impressive, wide-ranging vocals, moving between heavy and calmer atmospheres, complex harmonies and structures, syncopation, and polyrhythms.
Their albums are generally (so far) concept albums that address current issues in both society and human existence.
The name "Pain of Salvation" was coined by Daniel Gildenlöw, who explained it as follows: "It means balance. Accepting good and bad. It's also a good everyday expression: when something doesn't go as planned, [the expression 'pain of salvation'] indicates that it's just a small setback on an otherwise painless path toward one's goal."
Many of the songs on this album have been combined into two medleys and rearranged, such as "Ashes," whose chords have all been changed from minor to major, completely changing the mood compared to the original version on "The Perfect Element Part One."
This makes it a unique album, and I recommend it to anyone unfamiliar with Pain of Salvation, to appreciate the overwhelming and moving sensations this band is capable of inspiring in the listener.
A superb live show in my opinion, very representative of the spirit of the band or perhaps more simply one of the live shows that I love the most, and that I often sit down to listen to to bring back some memory or emotion, because Pain of Salvation know how to do this very well.
