Love Over Fear and Love Over Fear Acoustic, two albums by Pendragon. The first is the original 2020 album, while the "Acoustic" version is a rearranged reworking of the same songs, later released as a limited edition in 2022.
Â
Pendragon (meaning "dragon head") is an English neo-prog band founded in 1978 and active in the progressive rock scene. They also include Clive Nolan , whom we discussed on the occasion of the release of his recent album, Siege by Imaginaerium.
Â
I've combined the reviews of the two versions because I consider the entire box set an essential listen in this band's discography and necessarily a unified package, with the acoustic version complementing the original album rather than replacing it.
Â
The artwork for both versions, created by Liz Saddington, is beautiful.
Love Over Fear

Love Over Fear is a masterpiece of modern neo-prog with top-notch production and extraordinary performances, featuring the extraordinary voice of Nick Barrett. It features powerful melodies, great emotional charge, a good dose of complexity, and new sounds with moments of pastoral and folk, making it one of this band's finest works.
Â
It's a 2-LP set, 64 minutes long, with 10 tracks + 2 bonus tracks (four of which are about 10 minutes long).
Nick Barrett's songwriting skills are incredible; he manages to convey strong, nostalgic, and inspiring emotions. The guitar solos and lyrics are excellent. One of the reasons I like this album is the variety of styles in the songs; the best in my opinion are "Water," "Soul and the Sea," and "Whirlwind," as well as the ballad "Starfish and the Moon."
The rest are masterpieces, like "Eternal Light," "Truth and Lies," "Afraid of Everything," and "Who Really Are We?" (the latter appears twice, as there's also an acoustic version). "Everything" and "360 Degrees" are also very good.
Â
There are no weak points in this album; it's a true masterpiece of progressive rock from a band that never disappoints.
Â
Highly recommended!

Love Over Fear Acoustic

Love Over Fear Acoustic is a special edition of the 2020 album Love Over Fear, a complete acoustic version of the original. Featuring a reinterpretation of the original, it pays particular attention to melodies and emotions, making it a complement to the original album rather than a replacement.
Â
The acoustic versions highlight the melodies and compositions that in the original were driven by the enthusiasm triggered by a broader instrumentation, and enhance the emotional depth thanks to splendid acoustic arrangements.
Â
The 10 tracks are the same as the original version, except for "Everything," which is not included in this acoustic version.
Â
This is an excellent reinterpretation, which once again reminds us of the great talent of a great band that has been active for over 40 years.

In Conclusion…
…this is a very successful project; the acoustic album is an extremely valid reinterpretation of the original album, and both the acoustic and instrumental versions are overall some of the band's best work, and that of neo-prog in general.
Highly recommended!
