Erpland, the second studio album (after a series of self-released cassettes) by Ozric Tentacles, was released in 1990.
This digitally remastered version highlights the exceptional quality of their music, and every track is a delight to listen to.
A predominantly instrumental album with the usual fusion of influences from psychedelic rock, electronica, and world music, its spatial, swirling, and often ethereal musicality featuring electronic sounds and acoustic instruments, synthesizers, guitars, flutes, and various electronic and ethnic percussion instruments.
A highly immersive atmosphere pervades the album, and the listener finds themselves "lost" amidst the overwhelming rhythms and psychedelia. Despite its undeniable complexity, it is an accessible and fun album.
The album contains 12 beautiful tracks.
- "Eternal Wheel," a powerful opening track, is space rock with distorted guitars and very powerful bass lines.
- Sunscape with great D minor variations and excellent synth work.
- Crackerblocks, a very atmospheric space rock, beautiful.
- A Gift of Wings, a hypnotic track with a rousing percussion base and incredible synths and guitars.
- Tidal Convergence, an enveloping and impetuous song.
- Mysticum Arabicola with its Middle Eastern sound.
- Valley of a Thousand Thoughts, a riot of fantastic atmospheres.
- The Throbbe with a hypnotic and danceable groove.
- Iscence with its splendid reggae and exceptional bass part.
- Snakepit, an Arabian progression.
- Toltec Spring, very disturbing and atmospheric.
The stylistic variety in this prog-space-rock masterpiece is breathtaking. Albums like this are a benchmark for an entire genre. A great album, still relevant after 35 years.
