Softs by Soft Machine, 1976 album, here in a 2025 reissue.
An album that really sounds different from all the previous ones, so much so that the most purist fans might be disappointed. As already in Bundles, the experimental and psychedelic character is much diminished, but it makes way for truly excellent jazz-fusion.
The band's sound moves towards a more incisive jazz-rock fusion led by the guitar, with particular attention to more structured and rock-oriented compositions, which represents a clear break from their previous, more progressive and organ-centered sound.
Excellent guitar work by John Etheridge, a more rock-oriented bass from Roy Babbington, and well-structured and composed tracks, especially those written by Karl Jenkins.
The emphasis on the organ and the freer improvisation of previous eras is missing, and Robert Wyatt is absent, but of course he couldn't be everywhere. The participation as a guest of Mike Ratledge on synthesizers is outstanding.
Some notes on the tracks:
The drum solo by Marshall on the track Kayoo is simply incredible.
Nexus is a very short keyboard piece that, together with One Over The Eight, paves the way for great jazz rock with an incredible saxophone, simply fantastic.
The last track Etka is a composition by Etheridge, a wonderful acoustic guitar piece.
This album, like the previous Bundles, is truly excellent, highly recommended for any jazz fusion enthusiast.
