Take Me Back to Eden,  Sleep Token's third album, released in May 2023.

Today's music makes even dinosaurs like me realize that two and a half million monthly listeners aren't everyone's cup of tea. This London band's Spotify score is a remarkable figure, and that's how success is (apparently) measured "numerically" these days. The band gained popularity thanks to a series of highly successful singles and their viral success on the TikTok platform. I have to say, the fact that so many appreciate this music is truly significant in my opinion.

A band of "masked heroes," Sleep Token use pseudonyms ("Vessel" and "II") and perform in disguise: while their names are known, their identities remain unclear, with an enigmatic allure that appeals to many young people. The band was founded in London in 2016, led by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist (Vessel). Anonymity is a key element of the group's image, which always performs wearing masks and wigs. Legend has it that a deity called "Sleep" inspired Vessel, who dedicated the band's name and music to it, pursuing the mission of spreading the "Gospel of Sleep."

In addition to Vessel, the group relies on session musicians for live performances, including a bassist, a guitarist, a drummer, and three backing vocalists.

To understand the reason for this extraordinary success, one must listen to the album in its entirety, and in doing so, one will realize that this album has many remarkable features: its astonishing emotional depth, the quality of the production, the great fusion of genres with a bold mix of metal in its core, djent, and post-metal forms, along with electronic and ambient music, but also touches of trap and R&B, jazz, electronica, and hip-hop, all in a digitally compressed sound, with excellent vocals and an overall engaging and emotional atmosphere, making for a very powerful album.

The artwork is also beautiful. All the ingredients are there.

What's surprising to me is their versatility in terms of genres and intensity. I've read these two questions about them, which I won't answer, since the questions themselves say it all:

Radio-friendly Djent band?

R&B band on steroids?

It's hard to find a solution that satisfies everyone; perhaps they should narrow their focus, or maybe not. Who are we dinosaurs to say where music should go? This is the present, perhaps the future, and in my opinion the prospects are excellent... Their latest album, from 2025,  Even in Arcadia, is also very good.

Did I like it? A lot, and I recommend it to everyone.
