Pain of Salvation's 2014 album Falling Home, an acoustic album featuring hits from their past with new arrangements that render almost all the songs almost unrecognizable, showing them in a completely new light. It includes covers of Dio's "Holy Diver" and Lou Reed's "Perfect Day," and a previously unreleased track, the title track.
Gildenlöw resurfaces with his splendid voice, going from one surprise to the next, each time different.
The revisited versions of older songs have divided fans of this band; some praise the musicianship and innovative arrangements, especially the covers, while others find the album uninspired, inferior to their previous live acoustic effort, 12:5 (with which I agree). In reality, it's a creative experiment that reflects the band's move toward a different sound.
Perhaps the title track is the weakest and most predictable piece. The covers are very successful. This album features 50s-60s rock, jazzy notes, country/folk vibes, nightclub swing, soul choirs, reggae flourishes, and much more.
I also love this album.
Highly recommended. Something different, but still beautifully played.
