Watershed by Opeth, a 2008 album.

As already seen in the biographical profile dedicated to them, it is one of the most important and divisive records in their discography, being the band’s last work to feature strong death metal elements before the shift to the classic progressive rock/folk sound of the following years.

2007 was a year of major changes for the Swedish band. After the success of Ghost Reveries (2005), drummer Martin Lopez and guitarist Peter Lindgren decided to leave the group.  Mikael Åkerfeldt, the frontman, immediately got to work to find new members and recruited guitarist Fredrik Åkesson (ex Arch Enemy) and drummer Martin Axenrot.

So, here is the official Opeth lineup that recorded Watershed:

- Mikael Åkerfeldt: The frontman, handling vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and also acoustic guitar.
- Fredrik Åkesson: On his first run with the band, he handles lead guitar.
- Martin Mendez: The bassist.
- Martin “Axe” Axenrot: The drummer, who also handles percussion. It was his first full-time studio album with Opeth.
- Per Wiberg: Keyboards, Hammond organ, piano, mellotron and backing vocals.

And let’s not forget the guests:
- Nathalie Lorichs: She lent her female voice to the opening track “Coil”.
- Lisa Almberg: She played the oboe.
- Christoffer Wadensten: He played the flute.

With this new lineup, Åkerfeldt decided to dive headfirst into even more brainy and experimental sounds.

Even though “Watershed” isn’t a concept album, it’s tied together by a very strong common thread, centered on loss, radical change, and the more hidden sides of the human mind.  The title itself, “Watershed” (meaning a divide or turning point), reflects this idea, both in the lyrics and in the band’s real life.

The lyrics talk about those crucial moments when a life or a situation takes an unexpected turn, leaving the past behind.  They also reflect Opeth’s period of change after the departure of some historic members.  Many songs explore the pain of the end of a love story or the loss of a loved one, and how that can leave a void and a feeling of loneliness.  They also describe the hard emotions you feel when you lose your bearings, such as paranoia, guilt, and psychological anguish.

“Watershed” is a key album in Opeth’s career, a turning point that blends their classic Progressive Death Metal with ’70s Prog Rock influences and avant-garde experimentation.  It’s the last album where Mikael Åkerfeldt uses growls, before focusing exclusively on clean singing for many years.

The album is an exciting journey through striking contrasts. In an instant it shifts from delicate, intimate acoustic ballads to powerful, dissonant death metal outbursts.  Per Wiberg’s heavy use of Hammond organ, Mellotron and synthesizers gives it a retro vibe that recalls great bands like King Crimson and Gentle Giant.

The tracks break away from the classic verse-chorus structure and blend death metal riffs, odd time signatures, lightning-fast guitar solos, and even keyboard-led funk/jazz breaks.

Mikael Åkerfeldt delivers one of his most impressive vocal performances, with a deep, theatrical growl alternating with warm, melancholic clean singing.  The arrival of guitarist Fredrik Åkesson brings a more technical and heavy approach.

I have the Music On Vinyl version – MOVLP2162, a limited-edition reissue pressed on marbled vinyl, and only 4,000 numbered copies exist. The album also includes a bonus track, Derelict Herds.

“Watershed” marks a crucial turning point in Opeth’s career.  This album is the last example of their more classic death/prog metal sound, before the band embraced ’70s progressive rock starting in the 2010s.  The production is flawless, the dark atmospheres and an experimentation that blends elements of folk, jazz and extreme metal make it a truly great album.
