Damnation, Opeth's beautiful 2003 album, is the band's softest, most progressive-leaning, and completely devoid of growl vocals. It was written and recorded alongside Deliverance, released the previous year. Due to the quantity and quality of the songs, two albums with two distinct styles were released.
Unlike Deliverance, this album lacks the band's typical dark and aggressive sound. Damnation is a beautiful reworking of progressive rock with a strong melodic component and a fusion of genres that definitely leans toward prog.
An atypical album in the band's discography, but this lack of the harder parts of the sound, which feature extensive use of acoustic guitar and a very atmospheric sound, doesn't diminish it. Logically, for me, a lover of progressive rock, on the contrary, it makes it spectacular.
The band demonstrates their ability to tackle this genre exceptionally well. Martín López on drums in particular is extraordinary, especially on the songs "Windowpan," "In My Time of Need," and "Closure."
My favorite songs are "Windowpane," with a great intro, excellent vocals, and a great guitar solo; "Closure," "Death Whispered a Lullaby," and "Ending Credits," especially with a great acoustic guitar part.
If you love Åkerfeldt's heavy riffs and driving growl, you should know that they're completely missing from this album, but I think it's worth listening to, perhaps because of the greater prog edge, perhaps because the band is incredibly technical and the performances are perfect, or perhaps because Steven Wilson, who also co-wrote Death Whispered and Lullaby with Åkerfeldt, took part in the recording and production.
For me, this is a simply extraordinary album, which I recommend to everyone.
Beautiful.
