Sirio 2222, the debut album by the band Balletto di Bronzo, from 1970.
We've talked about this band for their masterpiece, Ys (1972), and for their most recent album, Lemures. The band was founded in Naples in 1969 and disbanded in 1973 due to lack of popularity after releasing two albums, only to reunite in 1996. This is their first LP, oriented toward psychedelic rock and blues rock, with a still "sixties" sound.
Music was undergoing a transformation in Italy, so the album is predominantly beat, but with a notable presence of hard rock, hard blues, psychedelic rock, and progressive rock.
There are reminiscences of early Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and some songs have symphonic rock influences, with arrangements for harpsichord, violins, cellos, and flute, combined with a voice distorted by psychedelic effects. Rock with a strong melodic vein and lyrics that address the lives of young people of the time, it was also a cultural revolution, not just a musical one.
"Meditation" is beautiful, romantic, and features an (embryonic) fusion of classical music and rock.
"Incantesimo" also deserves a mention, a fusion of blues with an epic, fairy-tale style.
And also "Missione Sirio 2222," an oriental-leaning psychedelic suite.
A good album, at times excellent, not a masterpiece, but the beginning of something that will then materialize and reach completion with the next album.
I personally enjoy listening to it; I like the sound, the mix of rock and harmony, and somehow the naivety that shines through in the compositions. I recommend it, both to complete your collection of this band and because it's definitely a pleasant and interesting listen.
