Jordsjø / Breidablik: Songs from the Northern Wasteland, by Jordsjø, a 2016 album.
These are two bands:
- Jordsjø, an Oslo band active since 2014, which helps keep symphonic rock alive by combining different genres in a new and beautiful form.
- Breidablik, another Norwegian band active since 2012, influenced by the Berlin School and ambient music.
We've already discussed this collaboration in connection with their 2025 album, Kontraster.
An excellent album, also divided into two parts, one entirely played by Breidablik and the other by Jordsjø, for a total running time of about 37 minutes.
The album is a synthesis of the bands' shared influences, albeit with their different approaches to progressive rock.
Fantastic space rock and psychedelia in the first half. Very ambient and atmospheric. The performance is top-notch and has a remarkable capacity for emotional transport.
The second half is truly convincing in its progressive style, with splendid flute and a combination of acoustic and electronic instruments. The vocals are solemn, and the tempos are epic and imposing.
With this CD, we discussed the two collaborations between these two bands to date.
I hope there's a follow-up because I think showcasing two different sides of contemporary prog on the same album is a very successful experiment.
There's much more to say about Jordsjø; they have a remarkable discography, which I've only touched on in part, so more posts will follow.
Highly recommended!
