The album's theme is illusion, deception, and magic. Peart makes a general reflection on music, comparing it to the game of rock-paper-scissors, in which each element must remain in balance with the others, and each can prevail over the other. Hence the idea for the album's inner sleeve.
A transitional album that divides critics, but which boasts excellent production with new producer Rupert Hine, great lyrics with sophisticated wordplay, and a beautiful fusion of acoustic and electric passages with highly emotionally charged songs.
It sometimes seems predictable for this band, but it's worth noting the mastery of each member, featuring a beautiful interplay of acoustic and electric guitars, Lee's (usual) great keyboard parts, and not only that, but also Rupert Hine and Jason Sniderman, and Peart's extraordinary drumming.
A rock album tinged with pop and some funk. Rush's music was evolving at the time, but the foundation remained rock. The powerful "War Paint" and "Chain Lightning" are beautiful, as are the emotional "Available Light" and the title track. "Scars" features a unique blend of acoustic and electric drums.
The critics have had mixed reviews. For me, it's a beautiful album and a necessary addition to this immense band's collection.
