My Generation by The Who, 1965 album.

My Generation is their first album and it happened in that 1965 that The Detours recruited a 19-year-old young drummer, a self-taught musician with a restless character who had trained as an electrician.

His name was Keith Moon. Soon after, The Detours changed their name and immediately began recording the album. We’re talking about The Who and My Generation, a piece of history.

We’re talking about a very young band who made an album that, in the original tracks, delivers hard Rock, the hardest up to that point perhaps in rock.

Powerful drum parts, massive bass, Daltrey’s tough voice and the powerful guitar, Townshend’s distorted Rickenbacker, bringing in ideas that influenced the rock that came after.

Pete Townshend, 20 years old, electric guitar, vocals and backing vocals

John Entwistle, 21 years old, electric bass and backing vocals

Keith Moon, 19 years old,  drums

Roger Daltrey, 21 years old, vocals

Among these, the impact of Keith Moon’s drumming is striking, with his spontaneous yet forceful style, wild, creative and complex.

It was their rhythm and blues period and on the album, alongside Pete Townshend’s compositions, there are covers of three songs in this style, two by James Brown and one by Bo Diddley, which aren’t the best on the album.

The title track, My Generation, is outstanding, with lyrics that represented the thinking of a generation that was criticized and judged by the society of the time.

The record immediately climbs the UK chart and reaches second place, a sensational and unexpected success.

A historic album, essential to rock.
