Out of Myself, the debut album by Polish band Riverside, was released in 2003. It was the only album to feature keyboardist Jacek Melnicki, who left the band after the album's recording.
It's a magnificent album with a very atmospheric, melancholic, and introspective sound, blending neo-prog, space rock, and progressive metal, characteristics that would become more evident in their subsequent works.
It's a concept album that tells the story of a man suffering from schizophrenia as he confronts his mental health and relationships, and this concept is musically expressed with great emotion and in a highly engaging way.
For me, it's a milestone in the band's career, and one that will see significant growth in the progressive metal scene.
We find melodic guitars, atmospheric keyboards, and the great vocals of Mariusz Duda. The guitars are heavy and at times have an aggressive touch that foreshadows the progressive metal of later albums.
The young band's great technical ability and excellent songwriting are already evident on this first album.
The songs are excellent; "The Same River" is an epic piece lasting about twelve minutes, one of the top tracks with great atmosphere.
"The Curtain Falls" has a beautiful dreamy atmosphere and great guitar solos.
"In Two Minds" is a very melancholic song with splendid melodies and great vocals.
It also marked the beginning of a trilogy called Reality Dream, which continues on subsequent albums.
A spectacular debut album that I consider a must-have.
Recommended!
