The Next Dream by  Massimo Pieretti, 2025 album.

Massimo Pieretti is an Italian pianist, keyboardist, and composer, a professor of music at the Ministry of Education, University, and Research. During his studies, he earned several academic degrees, including a first-level diploma in Piano and Electronic Keyboards for Popular Music from the Pescara Conservatory in 2016. His thesis, "From Genesis to Revelation - The History of Progressive Rock," was presented in person to Maestro Steve Hackett  in 2017. There's no doubt that his roots are deeply rooted in symphonic progressive rock, the most intense and sublime form of rock, and this is evident even when listening to his works.

His first solo album, a self-produced LP A New Beginning was released in 2022. It garnered considerable critical acclaim both in Italy and abroad, as well as receiving major awards and nominations (Best Debut Album on the English website Lazland, Nomination for Best Debut Album and Best Album Released in Italy on the radio station Progrock.com in the United States, and Fifth Place among the Best Progressive Rock Albums of 2023 on the Progressive Rock Central website, also in the United States).

A New Beginning is the first chapter of a trilogy, the third of which is currently in the works, titled Age of Man.

He then released the EP Creature of the Night, also self-produced, in 2024, along with several singles that same year. In 2025, he released his first live album, Things to Live!

To round out this brief biographical note, other projects he's worked on include keyboardist for the band Noage ("From Darkness to Life, a 2024 studio album) and recording collaborations as pianist and keyboardist: Claudio Milano/NichelOdeon/InSonar - Incidenti/Lo schianto, Kriss Corradetti - The Wanderer Seeker (2022), Lorenzo Cortoni - Home Alone (2023), and an album also released in 2025, Dominic Sanderson - Blazing revelations  (2025), which I discussed in the dedicated article.

And here is the second chapter of the trilogy, The Next Dream, which I'd like to introduce with his own words, which also perfectly describe the album's concept: “The Next Dream is my second solo album. Like the previous one, it's conceived as a concept album, a fantasy tale that tells of a dream world and the creatures that inhabit it and accompany us at night, almost echoing at times the society we live in. This album is quite a different work than A New Beginning; it's somehow more extreme, more jazzy, hard and pop at the same time, richer in sonic contrasts but also less orchestral. Ample space is given to the prestigious international guests who collaborated on this project. Everything is—as usual—characterized by a profound attention to musical arrangements and harmonies, unusual yet representative of my sound. The concept is based on a real story, a dark musical with its own fantastical character—myself or someone else—who acts as a guide, a bit like Dante's Virgil, along with a wide array of scenes and characters that characterize the unfolding of events”

I agree with what Massimo said, particularly regarding the "deep care for musical arrangements and harmonies," but I'll describe this in the track-by-track that follows.

It's also true that many prestigious international guests collaborate on this project. You'll find biographies of all the collaborators at the end of this article in the Line Up section, and the credits for the individual tracks in the Track List section, which I urge you to read carefully. These are musicians of absolute and recognized caliber, who enrich the songs with technique, taste, and creativity to a level of excellence.

COME HEAVY SLEEP Massimo describes it very well in his press release... "Come Heavy Sleep" is an old song dating back to the 1600s by British musician John Dowland. I rediscovered it, rearranged it, and updated it to suit our times, as part of a broader attempt to start a "small social revolution"—as well as a continuation of my musical research and experimentation that began with "OUT OF THIS WORLD" from my first album. “A NEW BEGINNING” Beautiful atmospheres in this song, beautifully performed and featuring the sublime voice of Maria Chiara Rocchegiani, which closes with spoken words.

CREATURES OF THE NIGHT, PT. 1 is an atmospheric track with a gorgeous electric guitar intro and the remarkable female vocals of Germana Noage (reminding me of the great Kate Bush). It's a ballad with a great rhythm section that ignites and grows in intensity, set against a backdrop of keyboards and electric guitar that provides an excellent guitar solo. The vocals and backing vocals are beautiful and very engaging. An evocative track with interesting spoken words, the rhythm contains moments of suspension that in themselves define a rhythm made of soundlessness. A great track.

GET IN LINE (Including Interlude Reprise) has a vintage-sounding keyboard opening, splendid vocals from Germana Noage, and a captivating, rhythmic track with beautiful backing vocals from Marco Ragni. The style is melodic and contemporary neo-prog. The chorus is very beautiful. The song has a significant acceleration that takes us back to the '90s with electro-pop influences. The electric guitar solo is beautiful, taking the song to a melancholic and intense atmosphere with beautiful vocals followed by a grand piano finale. A very touching piece.

THE CHINESE WITCH (Including Mo Li Hua) begins with piano, a piece characterized by two sumptuous female voices, Kate Nord and Maria Chiara Rocchegiani (in "Mo li hua," a song within a song, a traditional Chinese folk song). These voices remind me of Renaissance, with a rich layer of synths. Then a sustained rhythm begins with a beautiful piano riff, accompanying the vocals with keyboards and a super-precise bass. The atmosphere here straddles the border between prog and '90s electro-pop, with a beautiful emphasis on the more epic moments that build on an unfinished and prolonged crescendo that doesn't explode but rather slowly progresses before returning to the initial rhythm. The vocals are extraordinary, both in the singing and in the vocals that accompany the song's closing section, in a suspended and ethereal atmosphere accompanied by keyboards and piano inlays. The singing takes on a more folky tone, blurring the physical boundary between Italian folk singing and African and Arabic styles, with intervals of an almost lyrical, sometimes Celtic, style. Mark Cook's Warr guitar is very evocative. TOP TRACK.

I DREAMED OF FLYING begins with splendid strings, piano, and female spoken words. The song has a slow and romantic pace, a beautiful melody, and a spacious track with splendid dual male and female vocals by Michael Trew, lead vocals and backing vocals, and Amy Breathe on backing vocals. The texture of strings and keyboards is very engaging, built on melody and harmony with large, unobtrusive percussion. A classic and melodic neo-prog style reminiscent of the sounds of Renaissance and, at times, SolsticeThe keyboard solo is beautiful, and the rhythmic foundation is subtle yet effective, with a very effective use of cymbals at the end. One of my favorite tracks on the album.

Side B begins with "CREATURES OF THE NIGHT, PT. 2," immediately featuring engaging spoken words and an intense psychedelic rock atmosphere, with great guitar in the foreground and the splendid, passionate vocals of Laura Piazzai on lead and backing vocals, and Claudio Milano on backing vocals. It features beautiful deep bass and guitar parts. It's a captivating and enveloping piece, full, rich, ambitious, and beautifully constructed. A song to be played at full volume.

"ALONE" begins with piano and light keyboard and electric guitar sounds with plenty of sustain, forming a splendid intro. Then the piece begins, its rhythm and atmosphere reminiscent of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. Lorenzo Cortoni's voice is superb, deep and intense in this captivating piece, perfectly structured and beautifully composed. The drums are tasteful. A beautiful "song" with, once again, a great guitar solo.

THE FIRST TIME WE MET begins with piano and guitar, followed by a beautiful electric piano and keyboard melody, until the slightly distorted and melodic guitar enters, followed by the decisive and precise drums. The structure is beautiful and the intensity is great, with truly excellent guitars by Francesco Mattei and Vincenzo Zappatore and a beautiful vocal performance by Michael Trew. The intensity in the chorus and the counter-melodies is beautiful.

THE NEXT DREAM closes the album, a track divided into seven sections that evolve over about eight minutes. It begins slowly with intense vocals and a sound reminiscent of '70s progressive rock in both melody and emotion, evoking sensations worthy of the great symphonic rock of  Genesis with a beautiful structure and stratospheric guitar, vocal, and piano parts. The rhythm section stands out for its precision and complexity in its tempo changes. The guitar is superb, as the drums become pressing and complex in a long instrumental section. Then, at the end, the vocals return and the song grows in intensity until the mood suddenly shifts to completely electro-pop, but then becomes more rock-oriented at the end. The splendid vocals return, closing out the song and the album with electronic sounds and haunting vocals. The vocals, again at the top, feature Dominic Sanderson, Kate Nord, and Claudio Milano.

Many say, in the social media comments on my posts, that prog has nothing left to say, and I always firmly object. I listen to a lot of prog of these days, but this album, more than ever, is proof that it's absolutely not true that it's a declining genre. This is due to the quality of the production, the quality of the compositions, which blend a love of symphonic rock with the pop legacy of the late 20th century, but also and above all, the constellation of contemporary artists who carry the name of prog high, a multicultural and international mix that keeps prog alive and well, and listening to this album, in full health.

An album that deserves repeated listening to appreciate its nuances. The number of performers is impressive, and the contributions of the individual artists are crucial, all under the exceptional artistic direction of Massimo Pieretti, who has succeeded in bringing together such a wide array of artists to outline his vision of prog and, I believe, of music.

I've mentioned my wife in other articles, who isn't a prog expert but inevitably listens to the same records as me. She loves Renaissance and, while listening to this album, pointed out to me how equally beautiful the female vocals are on some tracks. Not an expert critique, but it's very telling of what actually resonates with the listener, which is what matters. And it seems like a significant comparison.

The arrangements are top-notch. I should mention every musician on every track, but that would be complex and detrimental to readability. I'll refer you to the lengthy biographical notes on the Lineup and Credits. A solid, concrete album. I can't wait to hear the third chapter of the trilogy. Congratulations, Massimo, a monumental, highly ambitious work that deserves many listens and... audiance. Excellent album! Absolutely recommended!

LineUp

Let's start with the keyboards, first mentioning Massimo Pieretti, who in his song credits always places himself with the humility typical of true artists at the bottom of the list, but who certainly deserves first place for his monumental work, including in bringing together and synergizing this long list of excellent musicians.

Massimo Pieretti, whom I mentioned in the introductory biographical notes, plays grand piano, electric piano, Hammond organ, synthesizers, choirs, and samples. The cornerstone of this project and one of the cornerstones of modern progressive rock.

Andrea Amici (keyboardist for Leviathan) on synthesizers. Italian composer and arranger, his musical output ranges from classical music to the integration of new musical technologies, including synthesizers, embracing new technologies in his creative processes. He uses notation and production software and draws on a wide range of virtual instrument and synthesizer libraries to create his complex orchestrations. He released a solo album, "The Eye of the Storm," in 2023.

Riccardo Ballerini is an Italian jazz pianist and keyboardist, jazz piano teacher at the conservatory of Frosinone and boasts collaborations with Randy Brecker, Scott Henderson and Banco del Mutuo Soccorso.

Marco Lo Muscio, a great Italian organist, pianist, composer, and arranger, is internationally renowned for his versatility and the eclecticism of his repertoire. His career has been strongly rooted in the use of the pipe organ in contexts ranging from sacred and classical music to progressive rock and experimental jazz. His collaborations with legendary figures in progressive rock include Steve Hackett (Genesis guitarist) and his brother John Hackett (flutist). He is a master of the church organ who has brought this instrument into a modern dimension, transcending genre boundaries.

On Drums and Percussion,  Mattias Olsson of the immense Änglagård whom I've spoken of extensively in reviews of all their albums, one of the benchmark bands of what I call Northern Prog.

Also on percussion is Mirko Rovina, a musician passionate about percussion and improvisation, but also a painter, poet, and writer (Sei il mio posto is his book published by Aletti Editore in 2025).

Fabio Moresco on drums, an Italian drummer who was the "pulsing rhythm" of two of the most prestigious Italian progressive rock bands: Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and Metamorfosi, with his emotional, rock-like, powerful, and unmistakable style, combining technical precision and emotional sensitivity.

Rounding out the rhythm section are:

Fabrizio Russo on bass, an Italian bassist and musician who has collaborated on several projects, primarily in the Italian rock pop scene.

Billy Allen on bass, a bassist and singer who plays in a cover band in the Reno area (USA) and is a host on House of Prog Radio.

Gianluca Del Torto on bass, an Italian musician, bassist, and lyricist active in various musical fields. He is primarily known as a bassist, but his activities also include composing music and writing lyrics (as a lyricist).

Tom Hyatt on bass, a prominent American bassist and backing vocalist in the progressive rock scene, who played with several prominent bands, including Echolyn from 1991 to 1995, before returning in 2002 and remaining with them until 2018. His style is compact and energetic, perfect for the complex arrangements typical of the progressive rock genre.

Michele Raspanti on bass is an Italian bassist on the hard rock and metal scene who has worked on numerous projects, including the Italian symphonic metal band Secret Rule, as well as Graal, Pizzigrigi and Noage. His style is energetic and incisive, contributing to the punch and power typical of his favorite genres.

Gabriele Pala plays the Chapman Stick, a stringed instrument that allows for independent playing with both hands, covering rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic parts simultaneously. He is a leading figure in the field due to his innovative use of the instrument, his technical prowess, and his openness to musical experimentation. He is an Italian multi-instrumentalist and digital artist, masterfully playing guitar and bass. His musical work spans various genres, with a particular focus on progressive rock, metal, jazz, and avant-garde music. In addition to the Stick, he uses full-range electric guitars (such as 8-string guitars), bass, and piano, often experimenting with distortion and multi-FX effects to amplify the Stick's sound.

The vocals are numerous and absolutely outstanding, including the great Laura Piazzai, whom I recently mentioned in my review of Imaginaerium's 2025 album Siege, a splendid project with the great Clive Nolan (Pendragon, Arena...) and Eric Bouillette, but whom we know for a prolific solo career and other important projects.

Also on vocals is the aforementioned Dominic Sanderson, who, reversing roles, collaborates on the album produced by Massimo with a vocal performance on one of the tracks.

The contributions of... are fundamental

Amy Breathe, an Italian solo singer in the world of rock, hard rock, and '80s heavy metal.

Germana Noage, a vocalist, songwriter, frontwoman of the aforementioned Noage, and also a vocal coach.

Kate Nord, a classically trained Finnish singer-songwriter and vocalist who creates symphonic fantasy metal music from central Italy.

Maria Chiara Rocchegiani, Italian singer (lead vocals) and musician, active in progressive rock and experimental music projects ranging from early music—performing in "Compositori ieri e oggi" concerts—to contemporary progressive rock. She has participated in performances where the voice is combined with early instruments such as the viola da gamba, vielle, and medieval harp, in a context of contemporary and experimental music.

Lorenzo Cortoni, an Italian singer and guitarist from Rome, is the frontman of the rock band Road Syndicate, who also released a solo album, "Home Alone," on which Massimo Pieretti also played.

Claudio Milano, a "speleologist/climber" of the voice, designer of sound geometries for theater/performance/dance/installations, and also a teacher, music therapist, actor, performer, and illustrator, has released several albums and performed with some of the world's greatest musicians in classical, rock, jazz, ethno, avant-garde, and pop.

Marco Ragni, an Italian multi-instrumentalist, has always been active in musical genres that include a psychedelic aspect.

Michael Trew, a singer-songwriter from the Pacific Northwest who initially explored Indian classical music, formed the folk/prog rock group The Autumn Electric in 2008, and has enjoyed a long and prolific career that has led him to 2025 with notable collaborations, including this one with Massimo Pieretti.

The Wind section is wonderful with

John Hackettthe younger brother of guitarist Steve Hackett, who plays his primary instrument, the flute (but also plays guitar, bass, bass pedals, and keyboards). His career spanned the 1970s, with collaborations on major albums, almost all of Steve Hackett's, including his masterpieces, but also with Anthony Phillips on his masterpiece, The Geese and the Ghost, a good number of solo albums, and collaborations with top-notch artists and bands, a cornerstone of music of the last six decades.

Rob Townsend on saxophone, a master saxophonist and flautist who has played alongside Steve Hackett since 2001 and is a key and longtime collaborator, appearing on nearly all of Steve's recent productions, including his latest studio album, The Circus and the Nightwhale (2024).

Lauren Trew on clarinet and bass clarinet, Physician Assistant, Musician and Vocalist (The Samurai Of Prog), Seattle-based musician and singer (wife of Michael Trew), known primarily for her role as a backing vocalist and collaborator in progressive rock projects and as a clarinet player.

We have the splendid Strings with

Lisa Green, on violin, an internationally renowned Australian violinist who has performed with major orchestras such as the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, the Rome Opera House, and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Mauro Cipriani, on cello, is an Italian cellist who has collaborated with several orchestras both nationally and Europeanly, performing in various concert settings. He is a multifaceted figure in the world of cello, combining performance experience with a strong dedication to education and musical dissemination.

Gianni Pieri, on cello, is an Italian cellist, electric bassist, double bassist, and music teacher with a long career. He is known for bringing the cello, a typically classical instrument, into less conventional contexts such as jazz and progressive, demonstrating great musical versatility.

Finally, the many prestigious guitars:

Nick Fletcher, British guitarist and composer, with a long and distinguished career in both classical guitar and fusion/progressive rock, has been described by Steve Hackett as "the best jazz/rock guitarist in the UK."

Simone Cozzetto, guitarist, composer, and Italian multi-instrumentalist, is active in the progressive rock scene with his solo career and collaborations with internationally renowned musicians such as the Echoes, one of the most famous  Pink Floyd tribute bands. He has collaborated with artists such as Kee Marcello (Europe), Durga McBroom (Pink Floyd backing vocalist), and Titta Tani (Goblin), to name a few.

Roberto Falcinelli, electric guitarist, has already collaborated with Massimo on the album Things To Live! (2025) and his guitar style is reminiscent of Pink Floyd ( Gilmour era) or  Marillion  (Fish era).

Francesco Mattei is an Italian guitarist, composer, producer, and music teacher, very active in the hard rock and symphonic/progressive metal scene. In addition to his work as a musician, he is also a sound designer and composer for visual media (film, TV, and video games).

Fabio Lanciotti, Italian guitarist, arranger, record producer, and sound engineer, is a founding member of the Road Syndicate. His long career is characterized by great versatility, ranging from live performances in rock and cover bands to studio production and teaching.

Peter Matuchniak, a British guitarist with a style that blends progressive rock, pop, and jazz fusion, has released several albums and collaborated as a founding member with various projects such as Gekko Projekt and Evolve IV, Kinetic Element, and Bomber Goggles, and has performed as a guest musician on albums by artists such as Marco Ragni, Transport Aerian, and Steve Bonino.

Jean-Luc Payssan, French guitarist and composer, is a founding member, along with his brother Thierry (keyboards), of the historic progressive rock band Minimum Vital, a benchmark of French progressive rock with a style characterized by a fusion of Celtic, medieval, and Middle Eastern influences with progressive rock.

Luigi Pistillo is an Italian guitarist, composer, record producer, arranger, and teacher. His work as a producer, arranger, and guitarist has generated over 90 million streams on Spotify and 500 million views on TikTok, collaborating with artists from around the world such as Yann Muller, Kevin McKay, and Mark Mendy.

Attilio Virgilio is an Italian guitarist, singer, and musician known primarily for his work in Italian progressive rock. He is a prominent figure in the band Montefeltro, of which he is the lead singer, vocalist, and guitarist (including 12-string guitar, synthesizer guitar, and loops).

Vincenzo Zappatore is an Italian guitarist primarily active in metal and rock music, lead guitarist, and one of the founding members of the Roman band Aetherna. His style revolves around metal, but he has also collaborated with an acoustic soul/jazz duo called "Suoni DiAmanti," where he plays 12-string guitar and electric guitar in a more intimate, acoustic setting.

Mark Cook is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer who plays the Warr guitar, a guitar with an extended touch that uses the tapping technique in progressive rock and experimental music. His unique sound and compositional style often challenges musical conventions. Among his many projects, he was in the band Herd of Instinct, which features atmospherically complex instruments and whose self-titled debut album boasted an impressive roster of guest drummers, including Gavin Harrison and Pat Mastelotto (formerly of King Crimson). The Warr guitar is part of the broader "touch guitar" or "tap guitar" family. It is similar to an electric guitar, but typically has more strings and a longer scale, extending its range up to six octaves. Cook's mastery of this instrument allows him to play both guitar and bass parts simultaneously, creating rich, layered soundscapes.
